Sustainable
Procurement Workshop
Fort Carson, the State of Colorado government and
a growing number of organizations in Colorado
(including all federal government operations and the
upcoming 2008 Democratic National Convention) are
committed to a path of sustainable or "green"
procurement. Effective systems for sustainable
procurement include research and education,
life-cycle management (LCM) systems, cooperation
from vendors, incentives, and integration with other
sustainability goals - especially Zero Waste. This
workshop brings together people on the leading edge
of sustainable procurement in Colorado to explore
best practices and collaboration potential. All
vendors and procurement professionals in Colorado,
especially the Southern Colorado region, are urged
to attend and participate.
Presenters will include representatives from:
Colorado Association for Recycling, State of
Colorado, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
Colorado Alliance of Sustainable Business
Associations, Corporate Express, U.S. General
Services Administration and U.S. Army's Fort Lewis
and Fort Carson.

leaders) of large organizations who are undertaking
the journey of sustainable living and operating.
What has worked well and not so well for their
particular organization? Leaders will share
knowledge and experience that can help peers from
other organizations overcome obstacles.
Panel Members & Presentations:
Land Use and Transportation
Workshop
Fort Carson's Sustainable Transportation Team is
presently developing a long-term Sustainable
Transportation Plan in close collaboration with the
City of Colorado Springs, Mountain Metro Transit and
Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments. The plan is
also closely integrated with Fort Carson and the
region's land-use plans. Key sustainable
transportation goals include reducing auto traffic
congestion on Post through reducing single-occupant
vehicle use - estimated to be 92 percent in the
region. A major challenge for Fort Carson and for
the region is the "Last Mile" that people without
personal vehicles need to navigate to reach their
offices, homes and other destinations. This workshop
will examine the cutting edge solutions to the Last
Mile challenge from both land-use and transportation
system perspectives. Technologies or systems to be
explored will include personal rapid transit, "flex"
car or two-wheel vehicle systems that make vehicles
available on a short-term basis, parking management
schemes and other potential solutions.
